The command menu and keyboard shortcuts
The command menu
Press ⌘K on a Mac or Ctrl+K elsewhere, or click the ⌘ button at the top. Type what you want and press Enter:
- something to do with the conversation you're reading, or the ones you've ticked: archive, delete, star, label as, move to, reply, mark as unread…
- a folder or label to go to: starred, receipts, contacts, calendar, filters;
- something to make: compose, new label, new folder, new contact, new event;
- a setting: dark theme, compact density, turn on single-key shortcuts.
A few letters are enough (arch finds Archive). When nothing matches, Enter searches your mail for what you typed. Esc closes the menu. Beside each command is its single-key shortcut, when those are on.
In the list, the menu acts on the conversations you've ticked. With none ticked it offers no conversation commands, rather than guess which one you mean. It works whether or not single-key shortcuts are on, and while you're reading a message too.
Single-key shortcuts
One-key shortcuts are here for anyone who wants them. They're off until you turn them on: in Settings → Keyboard shortcuts, from the command menu (turn on single-key shortcuts), or with Turn on in the panel the ? button at the top opens. Each browser remembers its own choice. They're ignored while you're typing.
They're off to start with because single keys get in the way of speech input and some screen readers, where a spoken word can set off several of them.
